Beliefs

The Authority of Scripture

We earnestly strive to follow the Lord as he has revealed himself to us in the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments. We believe that the Bible is the inspired and inerrant Word of God, and therefore the only infallible rule of faith and practice.

The Communion of the Saints

South City Church is a particular congregation of the body of Christ in the Shaw neighborhood of St. Louis City. While we are in fellowship and communion with all believers, we have submitted ourselves as a congregation to the oversight and accountability of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA). Our form of government is contained in the Book of Church Order (BCO).

The Guidance of Creeds & Confessions

We believe that the purest human expression of scriptural doctrines is found in the Westminster Confession of Faith with the Larger Catechism and Shorter Catechism.

We believe that the essentials of orthodox Christian faith are expressed in the historical creeds of the early church:

The Apostle’s Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell (Hades/Sheol). The third day he rose again from the deed. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God of God, Light of Light, true God of true God; begotten not made, being of one substance with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, and by the power of the Holy Spirit, he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake, He was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day, he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge both the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son, he is worshipped and glorified. He spoke through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.
